Professional Video Game Beta Testing - 5 Reasons For Rejection
There are many reasons why you might not be able to become a beta game tester. Some of these reasons are a tad strange, while others are completely sensible. That said, if you desire to know what might be keeping you OUT of the world of professional beta game testing, simply look below.
Most Common Reasons For Getting Rejected...
- You lack gaming experience. This is the most common grounds for rejection there is. Video game testing is for true-blue, lifelong gamers. Just because you like to play "Halo", "Call of Duty 4" or "Starcraft 2" on the weekends, that doesn't make you game tester material -- sorry. If your life has revolved around games since before you can remember, well, you are the kind of candidate the industry needs.
- You aren't old enough. Due to a plethora of reasons -- the biggest of which being child labor laws -- game testers must be 18 years of age or older. Some game companies can work around this "dilemma" and make exceptions for specific individuals, but it's a rare thing. Do not get your hopes up.
- You do not have the proper equipment. If you plan on testing games from home (which is the goal of many testers), then you are going to need to have the appropriate gaming gear; a HDTV, a xbox 360, a ps3, a nintendo Wii, and a high-end gaming PC. If you do not possess this gaming equipment (you really should if you're a true gamer), then your only option is to work at a game testing center -- and that's only if they'll accept you.
- You do not have a video game testing resume. No resume, no consideration of any kind, period. Being a beta game tester means having to do actual work which HAS TO be taken seriously. This isn't a leisure activity you do on the weekends.
- You have lousy grammar skills. Video game testers fill out a good number of reports & forms which are used by game coders to repair & improve game titles. If the reports aren't well detailed and easily understood, the programmers can't get the job done. If a programmer is unable to do his job, it means the tester has failed to do his.
If the 5 things in the above list aren't an issue for you, then you're undoubtedly a candidate for expert video game testing. All that's left for you to do is to start looking for game testing positions in your area -- and if you know where to look, that will not take you more than a week or two!
